Windows 7 Rescue / DVD – this version is not compatible

Your system fails to boot, either due to an update, a hard drive crash, a power off or just one of those things.

Usually a quick boot of the Windows 7 DVD, choose “fix” and everything is back up and running. Sometimes though the install disc throws this error at you:

“This version of System Recovery Options is not compatible with the version of windows you are trying to repair. Try using a recovery disc that is compatible with this version of windows.”

Fear not! simply boot again off the Windows 7 DVD and instead of clicking on fix, press SHIFT+F10
(It may be beneficial to ensure that drive with windows installed on it is the only one connected to the PC, reconnect the other drives on the next reboot)

you now have a command prompt, type and run the following commands one by one:

bootrec /FixMbr
bootrec /FixBoot
bootrec /ScanOs
bootrec /RebuildBcd

Reboot and carry on as if nothing had happened!
